Des Plaines Lights Up |
| By TribLocal |
Despite cold temperatures, everyone had a great time as Des Plaines Mayor Martin J. Moylan pulled a giant switch lighting up the City’s downtown at the Annual Holiday Lighting Ceremony, Friday, December 4, 2009, in Metropolitan Square. Adding to the evening, downtown merchants provided free tickets to a holiday movie at the Des Plaines Theater. Lighting Ceremony entertainment was provided by the Maine West High School Warrior Band, under the direction of Bernie Gerstmayr, the Singing Librarians, and the Des Plaines Park District’s Artistry in Motion and AiM2 Dance Companies. Earlier on Friday afternoon, local elementary, middle school and high school students decorated the Metropolitan Square holiday trees, provided by the Des Plaines Optimists, Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs. This year’s lighting ceremony theme was an “Old Fashioned Holiday” and Mayor Martin J. Moylan, City Clerk Gloria Ludwig and Des Plaines Park District Marketing Manager Gene Haring, Master of Ceremonies, dressed for the occasion. Members of the Des Plaines History Center roasted chestnuts adding to the “old time” atmosphere. Local merchants opened their doors to the public and served treats. Those participating included Dr. Yang, Dentist, Hair Cuttery, Clinical Associates, Flex Gym, Spa di da, Panera, Potbelly, Flower Art Studio, and Cheeseburger in Paradise. O’Hare Honda Group, Presstech and Robert Provenzano were also sponsors. The day was topped off with a visit from Santa, who arrived via a Des Plaines Fire Truck. The 2009 Holiday Lighting Committee, under the direction of Mayor Martin J. Moylan, was chaired by Katie Gotaas, Volunteer Chairman, Sherman Consulting, Inc., and consisted of representatives of various local agencies and City of Des Plaines Departments.
