By Pioneer Press Staff

State Sen. Susan Garrett (29th District) is one of the 2009 recipients of the Life Services Network "Legislator of the Year" Award for her work on restructuring the Certificate of Need (CON) program administered by the Health Facilities Planning Board under the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Garrett sponsored Senate Bill 1905 which passed the House and the Senate with an overwhelming majority to implement comprehensive reforms to streamline the CON Program and extend it for 10 years.

The goal of this legislation is to help maintain access to healthcare, prevent unnecessary duplication of healthcare facilities and improve the process of health facility planning.

Life Services Network (LSN) represents 535 senior providers, assisted living and supportive living throughout state -- the largest eldercare association in Illinois.

LSN is nationally recognized for its innovative programs, leadership and expertise on issues related to long-term care and senior housing and services.
